Charles Bartlett

Charles Bartlett was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1869. His original name was actually Charles Wellington Bartlett.

As a young man, Charles Bartlett attended the Julian Academy in Paris, where he studied under the famous painter, William Bouguereau. He then spent several years in Europe, studying art and honing his craft.

After returning to the United States, Charles Bartlett became a prolific painter, known for his mastery of both oils and watercolors. He captured scenes from everyday life, as well as landscapes and seascapes.

In 1917, Charles Bartlett was invited to join the Hawaiian Artists' Association. He accepted, and moved to Hawaii with his family. The beautiful landscapes and vibrant culture of Hawaii inspired him, and he created many of his most famous works during this period.

Charles Bartlett's paintings were exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world, including in Paris, London, and New York. He was awarded numerous prizes and honors during his lifetime, including being made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.

One of Charles Bartlett's most famous works is a series of woodblock prints he created during his time in Hawaii. These prints were made in collaboration with the Japanese woodblock printer, Tajimi Shinjiro. The series depicts everyday life in Hawaii, as well as scenes from Japanese mythology.

Charles Bartlett died in 1940, at the age of 71. He is remembered today as one of the greatest American artists of the early 20th century.
